William Kentridge, Bronwyn Lace and Neo Muyanga

Mahler & LeWitt Studios Residency | 2025

At the conclusion of the residency at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios, Bronwyn Lace and Neo Muyanga led two workshops sharing some of the most innovative artistic practices of The Centre for the Less Good Idea, the creative hub founded by William Kentridge together with Lace in 2016 in Johannesburg. Introduction to Pepper’s Ghost explored the Victorian theatrical illusion technique of Pepper’s Ghost, combined with the use of video and music. In Sounding Pictures – Live Soundtracks for Silent Films, new soundtracks were collectively created for contemporary silent films selected from the Centre’s archives. Finally, Kentridge delivered a lecture at the Teatro Caio Melisso Carla Fendi on the themes and methodologies of his work in relation to those of the Centre, through which he encourages artists to pursue "the less good idea"— an idea that initially seems peripheral or unproductive but ultimately leads to greater creative outcomes.
