Mahler & Lewitt Studios Residencies
The Carla Fendi STEAM Award 2021 marks the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with Mahler & LeWitt Studios, which since 2010 have offered in Spoleto a residency program for artists, writers, and musicians from around the world. Here, without ever meeting, the sculptor Anna Mahler and the artist Sol LeWitt lived and worked for many years, later leaving their studios to their heirs. Thanks to the encounter between Marina Mahler — daughter of Anna and granddaughter of Gustav Mahler and Alma Mahler — and Carol LeWitt and Eva LeWitt, wife and daughter of Sol, the curator Guy Robertson organizes residency sessions and workshops. The Foundation’s three-year support for Maïté Oucèni, Luis Alberto Rodriguez, and Afra Zamara — whose practices intersect fashion, art, and sustainability — was followed in 2024 by the support to the final concert of resident composer and pianist Baldwin Giang. In 2025, as part of the project that hosted William Kentridge and The Centre for the Less Good Idea for the Spoleto Festival, the Foundation supported the residencies and workshops led by directors Bronwyn Lace and Neo Muyanga, as well as the lecture by William Kentridge.
