ARTIFICIAL CREATION

THE ACT OF CREATING FROM NOTHING IN THE AGE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

29TH JUNE - 16TH JULY 2023
FORMER BAPTISTERY OF THE MANNA D'ORO - SPOLETO

As part of the Spoleto66 Festival dei Due Mondi, the Carla Fendi Foundation presented a video installation by Gabriele Gianni created using artificial intelligence tools, and exhibited at the former Baptistery of the Manna d’Oro. In the Renaissance space of the former Baptistery of the Manna d’Oro—“augmented” by AI — a digital stone figure embarks on a journey that could take it anywhere. Countless statues, set within an expanse of data, fill the void of the ancient apses, while distant music generates itself endlessly.

The flow of images alternates with a conversation that seems to juxtapose human and machine. What is nothingness? What are unity, symmetry, and beauty? What is mathematics? Is it possible for humans to find answers to primordial questions mediated by the logic of artificial intelligence? And above all, what does it mean to create?

The act of creation is challenged by the vastness of the data we have digitally produced, confronting us with a new form of writing — where words predict themselves, where imagination immediately becomes image, and where sound can generate endlessly through patterns that we only feel we can sense.
