FORMER BAPTISTERY OF THE MANNA D'ORO - SPOLETO
REALITY? is an immersive augmented reality installation by Gabriele Gianni that explores the intersection of the human and the virtual, reality and fiction, spirituality and digital culture. In the former Baptistery of the Manna d'Oro, after donning augmented reality headsets, visitors will walk through the church amidst marble and stucco, coming into contact with suspended three-dimensional structures. Real scans of human neurons, magnified millions of times, will release sound messages, memories, voices, and thoughts when touched. When visitors feel ready to conclude their experience, they will symbolically place their hands on the baptismal font, and the reality of the Manna d'Oro will shift, swallowed up by a virtual darkness. REALITY? is an attempt to use technology to ask profound questions; As the director explains, "it was born from the desire to prompt the visitor to ask themselves what reality is. Are we sure, in fact, that it isn't also an illusion? The work doesn't intend to provide answers, but rather to pose this universal question, using technology in the most disturbing and alienating way."
