AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME
The American Academy in Rome is a historic and prestigious institution that promotes the arts, culture, and science through its scholarship, residency, and fellowship programs. It also develops initiatives rooted in the local community that help foster relations between the United States and Italy. The Carla Fendi Foundation has supported cultural projects in collaboration with the Academy on several occasions, reflecting Carla Fendi’s longstanding appreciation for American culture.
To further enhance this bond, Maria Teresa Venturini Fendi, through the Foundation and the Carla Fendi Rome Prize, has supported two residency projects at the Academy: one in 2022 for Tony Cokes, a visual artist and professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University, and another in 2023 for Iranian-born, New York-based artist Kamrouz Aram, whose practice spans drawing, painting, collage, and installation.

The Foundation has also supported the residencies of two recent recipients of the Samuel Barber Rome Prize for composition, Baldwin Giang (2023) and Lembit Beecher (2025). With support from the Carla Fendi Foundation, and building on the longstanding collaboration between the American Academy and the Mahler & LeWitt Studios, the residencies were extended from Rome to Spoleto, where both composers presented concerts as part of the Festival dei Due Mondi. Other collaborative projects have explored the relationship between science and art. The most recent is the Foundation’s support for Galileo Week, a series of lectures and events featuring international guests, organized by the Academy in April 2026
