ART & SCIENCE INTO SPOLETO
25TH JUNE 2021 - 11TH JULY 2021
SPOLETO64 FESTIVAL DEI DUE MONDI
The Carla Fendi Foundation’s project for Spoleto64 Festival dei Due Mondi paid tribute to two great artists who lived and worked in the region from the late 1960s through the 1980s: Sol LeWitt, one of the leading figures of Conceptual Art, and Anna Mahler, sculptor and daughter of Gustav Mahler and Alma Mahler Schindler. Both chose to reside in Spoleto for long periods, immersing themselves in the city’s cultural life and leaving numerous traces of their artistic journeys. ART & SCIENCE INTO SPOLETO is a rediscovery of their personalities and of the creative ecosystem that Spoleto continues to nurture through the work of the Mahler & LeWitt Studios, the association founded by their heirs — Marina Mahler, daughter of Anna, and Carol LeWitt, wife of Sol — to create a residency program for artists of diverse disciplines from around the world. Art, but also Science. The past has already shown us how these are “two cultures in reflection,” rather than separate forms of knowledge.
EXPLORING ART
An artistic journey through the heart of Spoleto, revealing the cultural legacy of Sol LeWitt and Anna Mahler as it interacts today with contemporary artworks and creative expressions. On the occasion of Spoleto64 Festival dei Due Mondi, and in collaboration with the Mahler & LeWitt Studios — created by Marina Mahler, daughter of Anna, and Carol LeWitt, wife of Sol, and curated for many years by Guy Robertson — the Foundation presented EXPLORING ART, a contemporary art event spread across multiple locations throughout the streets and squares of Spoleto’s historic centre.
BODY, BRAIN, IMAGES - LECTURE BY VITTORIO GALLESE
Art and science are not separate universes. Cognitive neuroscientist Vittorio Gallese, professor of Psychobiology and Physiological Psychology at the University of Parma, a researcher focused on the relationship between the sensorimotor system and cognition, and the discoverer of mirror neurons - along with his colleagues from Parma - spoke to the audience of the Spoleto64 Festival dei Due Mondi in a meeting organized by the Carla Fendi Foundation at the Caio Melisso Carla Fendi theatre.
